The Institute of Technology Tralee has today announced details of the award of the title of Professor on 3 staff members, Dr. Brendan Guilfoyle, Dr. Muiris O’Laoire and Dr. Joseph Walsh. The designation of title was ratified at the IT Tralee Governing Body meeting on Monday, February 25th.
To be awarded the Professorship title, in addition to holding a PhD, the three individuals involved were required to demonstrate outstanding levels of academic distinction across the areas of research and scholarship of international standing, academic leadership and contribution to teaching and learning.
The majority of the membership of the IT Tralee Professorial Designation Committee were external distinguished academics from Universities within Ireland and the assessment panel was Chaired by Professor Roger G H Downer Ph.D., D.Sc., MRIA, FRSC, President Emeritus, University of Limerick and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo.
Dr. Oliver Murphy, President of IT Tralee in congratulating the recipients stated “these appointments are a significant milestone in the history of the Institution. The ITT is proud to have as part of its team, candidates of the calibre of the award recipients, who have contributed to the growth and development of the Institute over many years. All of the recipients have been recognised outside of IT Tralee in various national and international fora for their achievements which, amongst others, span the areas of peer reviewed publications, attracting research funding, business and community engagement, Masters and PhD supervision and innovation in teaching and learning.”
As part of the award process each newly designated Professor within one year will deliver a public lecture which will be held at the IT Tralee.
The award of Professorial titles comes at an exciting time for IT Tralee as earlier this month ITT and CIT lodged their submission for designation as the Munster Technological University (MTU) to the Department of Education and Skills. It is expected that the international panel appointed to review the MTU application will visit Cork and Tralee in April of this year.
